Article 4 - Methods used in Organizations for Training and Developing Staff
An organization's
training approach is essential for worker development, skill development, and
overall organizational growth. Depending on their objectives, available
resources, and the type of skills or knowledge they want to transmit,
organizations can use a variety of training methods and approaches.
Investment in training
has further become vital in light of advancements in modern society. As a
result, the importance of staff development and training cannot be overstated.
The foundation of staff development and training is the idea that for an organization to advance, personnel abilities must be enhanced. Training is the
methodical development of the information, abilities, and attitudes that
individuals need in order to perform satisfactorily on a certain activity or
job (Olaniyan
and Ojo, 2008). We’ll discuss on some of the approaches that modern organizations use to
Train and Develop their staff.
1.
On-the-Job Training
(OJT) - Employees are instructed in this while going about their daily
business. It may involve teaching others, seeing more seasoned coworkers, and
getting hands-on experience. OJT works well for jobs that call for real-world
experience and use of practical abilities (Mincer,
1962).
2.
Classroom Training - A
trainer or teacher presents material to a group of employees in an organized manner during traditional classroom training. This approach is helpful for
imparting conceptual understanding and basic abilities (Rosenbaum
and Drabman, 1979).
3.
E-Learning and Online
Training - Due to their adaptability and accessibility, online training
platforms and courses are becoming more and more popular. Employees get access
to training resources and modules at their own convenience and speed (Ebner,
2007).
4.
Simulations and
Role-Playing - Employees can hone skills and make decisions in a safe setting
by using simulations and role-playing games. This is especially useful for
developing soft skills like negotiation, dispute resolution, and communication (Olaniyan
and Ojo, 2008) .
5.
Workshops and Seminars
- These are interactive classes that concentrate on a certain subject or
ability. They promote involvement, dialogue, and practical exercises so that
participants can draw on one another's experience (De Grave
et al., 2014).
6.
Job Rotation and Cross
- Training - Employees experience numerous facets of the company by rotating
through several departments or responsibilities. This aids in developing a
broader skill set and comprehension of how various organizational departments
operate (Olaniyan
and Ojo, 2008).
7.
Mentoring and Coaching
- This promotes individualized advice and information transfer when less
experienced employees are paired with more experienced mentors. This approach
is successful at fostering personal growth and the development of leadership
abilities (Hopkins-Thompson,
2000).
8.
Case Studies and Problem-Solving
Exercises - Employees can better apply their knowledge in real-world settings
by being presented with scenarios for analysis and problem-solving, whether
they be hypothetical or genuine (Olaniyan
and Ojo, 2008).
9.
Gamification - Training
programmes can be made more engaging and motivating by using game aspects like
challenges, rewards, and competition (Armstrong
and Landers, 2018).
10.
Self-Directed Learning
- Employees can take control of their learning process when given the tools and
opportunities to do so independently. Access to books, articles, videos, and
other educational resources can be considered here (Olaniyan and Ojo, 2008).
11.
Conference and Seminar
Attendance - Employees can be exposed to the newest trends, best practices, and
networking opportunities by being sent to industry conferences, workshops, and
seminars (Olaniyan and Ojo, 2008).
12.
Peer Learning - encouraging
staff members to use presentations, workshops, or knowledge-sharing platforms
to impart their expertise and abilities to their peers (Topping,
2005).
13.
Continuous Learning
Platforms - implementing learning management systems (LMS) or other online
learning resources that provide a variety of courses and resources ( Olaniyan and Ojo, 2008).
14.
Feedback and
Evaluation - Training programmes can be tailored properly by identifying areas
for improvement via constructive feedback sessions and routine performance
reviews (Price et
al., 2010).
In order to accommodate
various learning preferences, job functions, and organizational requirements,
the most successful training techniques frequently combine several approaches.
It's crucial to frequently evaluate the effectiveness of training programmes
and make changes in response to feedback and results.

There are numerous other approaches to staff training and development in addition to these. Blended learning, which incorporates many training approaches, is used by some corporations. Others give hands-on training through apprenticeships or job shadowing. Others adopt social learning, which enables workers to share knowledge with one another via online forums and groups.
